Tu as vu le sigle GOTS on a label and you're wondering what it actually means? You're torn between an €8 t-shirt from a fast-fashion chain and a €30 organic cotton t-shirt, and you want to understand the real difference? This article is for you. We'll explain everything, no marketing bullshit: what GOTS-certified organic cotton is, how it differs from conventional cotton, and why at Talseume we chose to use it exclusively for our pieces.

Coton bio GOTS, c'est quoi exactement ?

GOTS signifie Global Organic Textile Standard. It's the strictest international standard for organic textiles. It doesn't just certify the raw material — it audits the entire production chain, from the field to the label sewn into your garment. When you see "GOTS organic cotton" on a piece, it means the product met a very precise set of requirements across several criteria: environmental, social, and traceability.

In practice, a GOTS-certified garment must contain at least 70% de fibres biologiques — most serious brands aim for 95% or 100%. The certification bans the use of synthetic pesticides, GMOs, toxic dyes, and harsh chemical finishes like formaldehyde. It also mandates decent working conditions (no forced labor, fair wages, safety). In short, it's a complete label: material + planet + people.

Organic cotton vs conventional cotton: the real difference

Conventional cotton — which makes up 80% of global production — is one of the most polluting crops on the planet. 2.5% of cultivated land mondiales produisent du coton, mais cette culture consomme 16% des pesticides et 7% des herbicides used worldwide in agriculture. That's completely disproportionate. And that's without counting water consumption: it takes between 7,000 and 10,000 liters of water to produce 1 kg of conventional cotton — the equivalent of a t-shirt and a pair of jeans.

GOTS organic cotton, on the other hand, is grown without pesticides or synthetic fertilizers. The soil stays alive, biodiversity is preserved, and the water used is up to 91% lower (according to Textile Exchange). The farming communities that grow this cotton aren't exposed to hazardous chemicals — a major public health issue in producing countries like India, Turkey, or Benin.

On your skin: the difference is real

Beyond the numbers, there's a tangible difference when you actually wear the garment. GOTS organic cotton isn't treated with the harsh chemical finishes used on conventional cotton (chlorine, formaldehyde, aromatic amines). The result: the fiber keeps its natural softness, doesn't cause irritation, and doesn't release chemical residues against your skin. If you have sensitive skin or allergies, you'll notice right away — the difference is physical.

Why organic cotton costs more (and that's normal)

A €5 H&M t-shirt and a €30 GOTS organic cotton t-shirt are not the same product. The price reflects an economic reality: growing organic cotton takes more labor, more time, yields per hectare that are 30% lower, and certifications that are costly to maintain (independent annual audits, traceability for every batch).

When you buy a hoodie or t-shirt in certified organic cotton, you're paying for:

— A raw material that doesn't pollute the soil, doesn't contaminate the water, and doesn't kill pollinating insects.

The real economic math is never "€30 vs €5". It's 30€ qui durent 5 ans (= 6€/an) vs 5€ qui durent 6 mois (that is €10/year). Not to mention we're talking about items you wear on your body every day — not something you want to cut corners on at any cost.

How to spot real GOTS organic cotton

The eco-fashion market is full of greenwashing. Here's how to check whether a garment is genuinely vraiment GOTS certified:

1. Le logo officiel GOTS

The logo should appear on the label or product page, with the word "Organic" and a unique certification number (for example "CU 12345-1"). If all you see is the word "organic" with no official logo, be wary: the term isn't regulated in France.

2. Clear traceability

A serious brand tells you where its fibers are grown and where they're processed. If the product page stays vague ("natural materials," "ethical production"), it's usually just empty marketing.

3. Le toucher du tissu

Quality GOTS organic cotton has a soft, slightly denser hand feel, without that "plastic" sensation you get with blended cottons. Over time, it keeps its shape and color (GOTS dyes are stable).

Talseume : pourquoi on a choisi le GOTS

When we launched Talseume, we made a simple choice: we wouldn't produce a single piece in conventional cotton. It was a radical call for a young brand, since it pushed our production costs up by 40%. But it matched our vision: we didn't want to be just another streetwear brand riding trends with t-shirts that fall apart after 10 washes.

Aujourd'hui, 100% of our cotton pieces are made from GOTS-certified organic cotton. Our hoodies, our t-shirts, our long sleeves. The only exceptions are pieces made from recycled materials (recycled polyester, modal, lyocell) or technical fibers (our coach jackets use a recycled fiber). No non-organic virgin fiber anywhere in the catalog.

In practice, you're wearing pieces where every fiber comes from fields grown without pesticides, processed in audited workshops, dyed with non-toxic colorants, and made by workers who are paid fairly. It's not a marketing pitch — it's just how we decided to run our brand.

Care: how to keep organic cotton in perfect condition

A GOTS organic cotton garment lasts a long time if you take care of it properly. A few simple rules:

Wash at 30°C max, ideally cold for dark colors. Most of a garment's carbon footprint comes from repeated washing at high temperatures — not from making it.

No tumble dryer. Let it air dry, flat for heavy sweaters/hoodies. The tumble dryer wears down the fibers, breaks the elasticity, and causes shrinking.

Lessive douce, sans javel. If possible, use an eco-label detergent, phosphate-free. Harsh detergents destroy the dyes and end up in groundwater.

Lave moins souvent. A hoodie or a pair of jeans doesn't need to be washed after every wear. Air it out, let it breathe, wash it when it actually needs it.

With ces gestes simples, un sweat Talseume tiendra 5 ans facile without losing its shape. Organic cotton isn't a fragile material — on the contrary, it ages better than conventional cotton because it hasn't been damaged by industrial chemical treatments.

Beyond cotton: our other responsible materials

Le GOTS, c'est le standard pour le coton, mais d'autres labels existent pour les autres fibres :

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 : certifies the absence of toxic substances in the finished product. Less strict than GOTS on the raw material, but useful as a complement.

GRS (Global Recycled Standard) : for recycled fibers (recycled polyester, recycled nylon). It is what we use for the zips, buttons, and reinforcements on our jackets.

LENZING (Tencel, Modal, Lyocell) : fibers made from sustainably managed wood pulp, produced in a closed loop (water and solvent are recovered at 99%). Soft, cool, biodegradable.

Conclusion : choisir consciemment

Buying a garment is an economic act et political act. Every purchase is a vote for the kind of fashion we want to exist in 10 years. GOTS organic cotton isn't a trend, and it isn't a greenwashing pitch — it's a concrete response to a measured problem (textile pollution outweighs that of global civil aviation).

At Talseume, we're not an "eco" brand positioning itself on green conscience. We're a streetwear brand that simply decided to do things right. Organic cotton is our starting point — not a sales pitch. If you buy a hoodie or a t-shirt from us, you're not buying a cause, you're buying a piece you like that happens to have been made cleanly.
