Why 100% GOTS Cotton — Talseume's Radical Choice

Why, from our very first sweatshirt, we refused to produce in conventional cotton. The making-of a radical choice that cost 40% more.

Talseume GOTS organic cotton sweatshirt — 100% certified radical choice

Here's the raw number: switching from conventional cotton to GOTS organic cotton across 100% of our catalog costs us €15 less margin on every sweatshirt sold. On the first thousand sweatshirts, that is fifteen thousand euros left on the table. For a young, self-financed brand, that amount hurts. We did it anyway, from day 1 of the 2024 relaunch. Not as a marketing pose. Out of coherence with a story that goes back to 2005 (the origins are here). Here's the making-of behind that radical choice. No greenwashing.

A choice consistent with twenty years of history

Before getting into the technical detail, some context. Talseume was born in 2005 in Bobigny, founded by Bihem, to fund his rap group's music production. Pure self-financing. Built out of necessity. A refusal of shortcuts. Twenty years later, the choice of GOTS organic cotton for 100% of the pieces in the 2024 relaunch fits that same logic: refusing the easy shortcut to do things properly.

The six values that have carried the brand since 2005 — transformation, achievement, courage, determination, perseverance, resilience — would have been betrayed by conventional cotton at 2 euros a piece. We would have made quick numbers. Yes. But we would have broken the coherence between the story and the product. And at Talseume, that coherence is what has made the brand for twenty-one years.

The easy option we turned down

In 2024, here's what we could have done to optimize margins:

— Source conventional cotton from China or Bangladesh.
— Have it made in a factory for €2 a piece.
— Sell it for €25 with an 80% gross margin.
— Make 5,000 sales in the first year = €100,000 gross margin.
— Reinvest in marketing to scale up volume.

That's the model of 90% of "premium" streetwear brands selling you a 60 euro sweatshirt that costs them 3 euros to produce. Huge margins. No questions asked. Fast growth. A lot of people do it. We said no.

The real math — how much GOTS cotton actually costs

The raw numbers. GOTS organic cotton costs on average 40% more expensive than conventional cotton at the raw material stage. The gap then widens further down the chain: workshops that work with GOTS require additional certifications (social audit, chemical audit), which adds 10 to 15% to the manufacturing cost. Total: +50 to 55% production cost on the same product.

Concretely, our Talseume Oversize Sweatshirt:

— In conventional cotton + standard workshop: cost price around 14-16 euros.
— In GOTS organic cotton + certified workshop: cost price around €28-32.
— Selling price: €90.
— Gross margin conventional cotton: €75.
— Gross margin GOTS cotton: €60.

We "lost" €15 of margin per sweatshirt sold. Over 1,000 sweatshirts, that's 15,000 euros of margin left on the table. For a young, self-funded brand, that's heavy. So why accept it?

Reason 1 — Coherence with who we are

Before officially relaunching Talseume, we spent 6 months redefining what we wanted to be. One realization landed, blunt: if we launch yet another streetwear brand with polluting materials and opaque production conditions, we're adding a problem to the world, not a solution. A personal stance, philosophical even: there are already too many brands that do not care. We refused to be one more.

GOTS cotton is our way of embodying that stance materially. You can write "I'm building an ethical brand" into your storytelling. Everyone does that. But when you accept 50% extra cost on 100% of your pieces from day 1, it is no longer storytelling. It is structural.

Reason 2 — The quality of the final product

We won't lie to you: we also chose GOTS cotton because it's simply better. Softer. More durable. Kinder to the skin. When you touch a 350 g/m² GOTS organic cotton sweatshirt after ten washes, it still has its original hand-feel. When you touch a conventional cotton sweatshirt after the same number of washes, it has lost its softness, it gets stiff, it starts pilling where it rubs.

We ran internal comparisons — same workshop, same weight, only the material changes. The difference in lifespan is 2 to 3 times longer in GOTS. Concretely: over 3 years, your Talseume sweatshirt will still be in perfect condition while a conventional cotton sweatshirt would already have been replaced twice. You pay more upfront. You pay less over time.

Reason 3 — Regulatory risk

There's a strategic that we did not immediately see: European regulation is tightening massively on textiles. The ESPR directive on eco-design (in force 2024-2027) will require a "digital product passport" for every garment sold in Europe, with full traceability of materials and production conditions.

Brands that have not planned ahead will have to reconfigure their entire supply chain under pressure — an operational nightmare. Us, since we already have GOTS sourcing with audits in place, we are compliant ahead of time. It is a competitive advantage that will become obvious in 2 to 3 years.

The making-of — how we found our GOTS suppliers

Step 1: the search

Finding a GOTS supplier when you're a small brand with no volume is hard. Most GOTS mills work with major brands (H&M Conscious, Patagonia, ASKET) placing multi-ton orders. We were ordering 200 kg for our first batch. We contacted 47 suppliers before a single one agreed to talk seriously.

Step 2: the social audit

Once we found the supplier, we checked the certifications. GOTS requires an annual audit by a third-party body (Control Union, Ecocert, IMO). We collected the certificates, checked their authenticity on the GOTS registry, cross-checked the numbers. No bullshit accepted. Our complete guide to GOTS cotton details the certification mechanism.

Step 3: production

The first production run was stressful. We did not know if the finish would be good, if the cut would hold, if the fabric would behave as expected. We received the first samples in April 2024. We wore them for 3 weeks, washed them 5 times, exposed them to rain, sun, the gym. They held up. Production validated.

What about the exceptions?

To be fully transparent: all our cotton garments are GOTS, but we do have non-cotton pieces. The coach jacket uses water-repellent recycled polyester (a technical material that cannot be replaced by cotton). The sport beanie is high-density acrylic (organic wool is too expensive and the finish isn't suited to sportswear). The balaclava is a thick blended jersey (in transition toward recycled cotton by 2027).

We do not claim to be perfect. We claim tobeing demanding where it counts : 100% of the cotton pieces are GOTS, period. The exceptions are on technical materials where the organic solution does not exist yet at a price we can absorb. We're working on it.

And the customer in all this?

In the end, do you actually notice the difference? Honestly, not immediately. An average customer buying a Talseume sweatshirt is not going to say "wow, I can feel the GOTS on my skin, this is incredible." But after 18 months, when their sweatshirt is still in perfect condition while others would already be in the trash, there, the difference will be obvious.

That's the bet we're making: real quality eventually shows. Not in the ads. Not in the storytelling. In the lifespan of the garment. In customer satisfaction at 6, 12, 24 months. In word of mouth. It is slower than a brand selling disposable pieces with a good campaign — but it is more solid.
